NEWS: Tinka Bechert is currently artist-in-residence at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Academy for Sciences and Humanities, BBAW Berlin.
Triangulations is an extensive research and art-making project, which focuses on the retelling of the historic prussian expedition to Egypt (1842-1845) that the Egyptologist Karl Richard Lepsius led. Tinka Bechert retraced this journey as an artist-in-residence in Cairo, Egypt in 2010 and also as an artist-in-residence at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Academy of Science and Humanities (2011) where much of the expedition diaries are stored. The project is a work in progress which and will culminate in a publication (artists book) in 2012.
Project text: 'The distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.'(1)
Most often, time is seen as the 'straight arrow' envisioned by Isaac Newton: Time marches in a straight line at a uniform pace from past to present to future. Time can only move in one direction - always forward, never backward, certainly not to the left or right, and never in circles.
The scientific concept of non-linear time is fairly recent and emerges most clearly in Einstein's quantum physics and the mechanics of relativity. These concepts have been largely ignored in a more general perception of time. Except under extraordinary circumstances, most of us viscerally experience time exclusively as a one-way ticket from past to future.
My current work is an exploration and re-conceptualisation of time, realized through a wider research subject on Egypt as a measuring scale of time and history, past and present. In particular I have been retracing the 1842-1845 expedition of Karl Richard Lepsius, who was 'the father' german Egyptology and also my own great-great-Grandfather. Among Lepsius achievements is the chronological or linear ordering of Egyptian artifacts and kingdoms. Questioning the understanding of historical 'truth', I am introducing the idea of kairos and non-linear time as a critique of the conception of history that emerged with 19th century german idealism which includes the 'homogenous and empty idea of time'.(2)
The ongoing collaborative Project Triangulations also included a recent expedition to Cairo, Egypt, some installation work in Ireland, some drawing on the train and some collaborative cooking with fellow artists Sarah Badran (Cairo) and Anne Devine (San Francisco).
