Tinka Bechert

In 2007, Tinka Bechert gewann das von der irischen Künstler-Förderung jährlich einmal vergebene Stipedium am renommierten Banff Centre in den Rocky Mountains in Kanada. Die zehn Wochen intensive Arbeit galten für die Künstlerin als Expedition, in der sie den historischen Spuren von den Erforschern Amerikas folgte. Sie war vor allem an früher Kartographie und Seefahrt interessiert, die sie in den Whyte Museum Archiven in Banff nachvollziehen und in ihre Arbeiten einflechten konnte. In ihrer Einzel-Ausstellung in der 'Other Gallery' am Banff Centre zeigte sie von Kartographie inspirierte gross-formatige Bleistift-Zeichnungen sowie eine Zeichnung auf dem Boden der Galerie, die in einer Art Happening langsam verschwand, als die Besucher darüber liefen. Als Spiegelung des Eingriffs des Menschen in die Natur, sind auch in den Arbeiten auf Leinwand oftmals nur noch Fragmente von der Präsenz des Menschen erkennbar. Als Kontrast zu der Romantischen Verklärung eines Nationalparks wie er in den Rocky Mountains existiert werden hier die Strukturen der 'verwalteten Wildnis' erkennbar.

In 2007 the artist was awarded the Irish Arts Councils' Banff Residency Programme, which consisted of a ten week stay in the Leighton Artists Colony.The artist treated this 'expedition' as a recreation of historical exploration informed by her interest in map-making and 19th century exploration as a multi-disciplinary approach to new surroundings. Research of the local history of exploration and navigation at the Banff archives (Whyte Museum, Banff, Alberta, Canada) was the starting point to create this new body of work. Bechert's Solo show at The Other Gallery at the Banff Centre consisted of works on paper and a floor drawing reminiscent of a map , which slowly disappeared as the visitors walked over it. Referencing the impact on our environment, the artist incorporated mundane fragments of human presence in abstract fields to contrast romantic notions of nature with the man-made, managed 'wilderness' of a National Park.
